Simplicity is complex.

Sustainable Fashion and its Essence

Understanding that sustainable fashion is not merely a matter of words, expressions, or trend-driven offerings, nor is it a concept of simple «fashion;» It is something that, for many individuals and at various levels of the supply chain, is currently complex to accept, assimilate, and even comprehend. Perhaps not due to unwillingness or lack of desire, but rather stemming from a condition of unfamiliarity. As a professional and fashion specialist, I aspire to actively support and contribute to the knowledge and socialization of this topic. The goal is to strengthen what the model and its philosophy represent, allowing individuals and businesses connected to the fashion industry, whether directly or indirectly, to start engaging and consider developing this process that is relevant and crucial for the industry and highly beneficial for the preservation of our ecosystem in the present and future.Understanding that sustainable fashion is not merely a matter of words, expressions, or trend-driven offerings, nor is it a concept of simple «fashion;» It is something that, for many individuals and at various levels of the supply chain, is currently complex to accept, assimilate, and even comprehend. The term "sustainable fashion" is the result of the combination of two fundamental concepts:

moda y diseño

Fashion:

Implies the ability to maintain or sustain something in the long term without affecting or depleting resources or harming the environment. In the context of fashion, sustainability relates to the adoption of practices that reduce the negative impact on the environment and communities, promoting socially ethical and responsible practices.

The term «sustainable fashion,» also known as ethical fashion, is part of the growing philosophy of design and sustainability trends. It has emerged to analyze, reflect upon, and comprehend the nature, meaning, values, and questions associated with fashion. As a production process, it represents a means of transformation and innovation in the fashion industry. It encompasses and articulates all actors and fronts of the supply chain, industrial transformation process, and production that impacts the end consumer. Its main function is to promote and encourage responsible, ethical, and conscious practices throughout the life cycle of a garment, from its design and production to trade, consumption, and disposal. By using more environmentally friendly or less negatively impactful materials, high benefits are generated for our environment, directly impacting our ecosystem and creating balance in the process. This adds value to the development of a socially ethical and fair trade.

It is important to keep in mind the value criteria sought by «sustainable fashion»

by reducing negative impact on the environment, using natural materials like organic cotton or recycled fibers to preserve and improve the health of the planet.

Ethical, and conscious practices, focusing on the fashion and textile industry. This is based on respect for the environment, advocating for a new form of moderate consumption that always promotes the use and manufacturing of quality products.

Sustainable fashion advocates for the need for innovative processes that involve designs using materials that are no longer considered.

based on qualitative, competitive, efficient, and innovative growth rather than solely quantitative growth.

in the supply chain (companies and their employees, suppliers, marketers), complying with values, responsibility, and rights, promoting fair working conditions.

Sustainable fashion avoids the damage produced by long-distance transportation, promoting the manufacturing and consumption of clothing from its own country, contributing to enriching the national industry and trade.

This type of clothing is produced in small quantities, and much of its production is done with manual intervention, avoiding pollution generated by machines involved in a 100% conventional process. It relies on human talent to manufacture clothing in the traditional way.

Sustainable fashion uses high-quality inputs and materials, and the developed garments must be of optimal presentation and very good quality, with the aim of promoting and extending the life of the product.

Jean Stéphane, a professor of ethical fashion at École Supérieur de Mode in Montreal, analyzes the main trends around sustainable fashion: «Ethical fashion» in the strictest sense is based on fair trade. It shows social awareness about the manufacture of clothing and aims to improve the working and living conditions of workers in the textile industry. However, in everyday language, the term «ethical fashion» is evolving towards a much broader definition that also includes ecological fashion, recycled fashion, and sometimes even local and sustainable fashion. Therefore, it becomes synonymous with the global concept of «responsible fashion.«

Responsible Fashion

Recycled fashion is crafted from inputs, clothing, and other materials that have already had a first life, or even two or three

Ecological fashion employs textiles with low pollution and low consumption, minimizing transportation and the carbon footprint of its collections.

Sustainable fashion ultimately merges with what experts call slow fashion. «We create durable and timeless clothing.» Thus, we encourage consumers to buy the best quality to consume less. In everyday language, the term «sustainable fashion» is often used, just like «ethical fashion,» to refer to the overall concept of «responsible fashion.»

«In a world facing increasingly urgent environmental challenges, sustainable fashion emerges as a beacon of hope and change. By opting for ethical, durable garments with a lesser impact on the environment, we can make a significant difference in the future of the planet.

Sustainable fashion is not just a passing trend or a philosophy; it is a movement that invites us to reflect on our choices as manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers, urging us to reconsider how we conceive the fashion industry as a whole. Behind every sustainable garment lies a story of effort, creativity, and commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
